ATHENS METRO

Athens Metro opened as a conventional steam railway in 1869, was electrified in 1904, and is now part of Line 1.

Beginning in 1991, Attiko Metro constructed and extended Line 2 and Line 3, which the Attiko Metro Operations Company (AMEL) operated from 2000 to 2011.

The operating lines are:

L1/Green: Piraeus – Kifissia, 25.6km and 24 stations.

L2/Red: Anthoupoli – Elliniko, 17.9km and 20 stations.

L3/Light Blue: Agia Marina – Doukissis Plakentias /Airport, 41km and 21 stations.

The ne2rk has four metro interchanges, enabling the lines to interchange with each other at least once. Each line has at least one station connecting with the “Proastiakos” suburban railway and Athens Tram. During the construction of the metro tunnels, artifacts of archeological interest were discovered. Exhibitions of ancient artifacts or replicas are exhibited at a number of metro stations, such as Monastiraki and Syntagma.

  • Tunnels built using the NATM method, 805m long; cross section 65.70÷118.50m²
  • A tunnel built with the TBM method 3445m long; cross section 70,54m²
  • Eight air intake wells
  • Halandri station – finishes included – using the C&C method
  • Nomismatokopion and Holargos station boxes.

-Construction of Peristeri and Anthoupoli metro stations

– Tunnels 303m and 28m long.
